Safety Footwear Standards 

EN345 / EN ISO 20345:2007 / EN ISO 20345:2011/EN ISO 20347:2011 


The safety footwear standard is referred as EN345, EN ISO 20345:2004, EN ISO 20345:2007 and EN ISO 20345:2007. All footwear designed before 2004 and still manufactured up to today carries EN ISO 20345:2004. EN ISO 20345:2007 standard for footwear designed or retested after 2007 the new standard is the EN ISO 20345:20011 and unlike the previous standards all foot wear manufactured after the 31st of July 2013 must meet that standard, now that doesn't mean that footwear made before that date is now of no use what it means is that footwear produced after that date will meet the new tougher standard.


The EN ISO 20345:2007 standard sets out minimum requirements that safety footwear must be successfully tested against. 


The EN ISO 20345:2011 - Specifications for safety footwear for general use: footwear with specific characteristics to protect the user against injuries that might occur in the work place. Fit out with toecap, this footwear protects the user against crushing impacts with protection provided on 200 J. The standard sets out new tougher minimum requirements that safety footwear must be successfully tested against.


The standard specifies all safety footwear must have toe protection. In addition to different protective features footwear represented by a combination of letters. 


EN ISO 20347:2011 – Specifications for safety footwear: footwear with specific characteristics to protect the user against injuries that might occur in the work place. (This footwear is not equipped with toecap for feet protection).


All the safety footwear in our product range comply with EN standards and applicable norms for worker safety within various professional fields. The various EN standards are based on the PPE Directive (89/686/EEC). The table below shows the various protection classes. 





S  Shoes marked S have protective toecaps which will withstand 200 J of impact energy and 15 kN of pressure.



Class I  Footwear made from leather and other materials, excluding all-rubber or all-polymeric footwear.



Class II  All-rubber (i.e., entirely vulcanised) or all-polymeric (i.e. entirely moulded) footwear.


Penetration-resistant outsole.


HRO Heat-resistant outsole compound tested at 300°C.


WR  Water-resistant footwear.


WRU  Water-resistant upper.


CI  Cold insulation.


HI  Heat insulation.


HI3  Heat insulation performance level 3.


Type 2  All fire suppression and rescue interventions where protection against penetration, and toe protection are needed, no protection against chemical hazards.


ESD  Electrostatic Discharge.


ESD IEC 61340-5-1  Electrostatic Discharge resistance below 35 MegaOhm.


SRA  Slip-resistance on ceramic tile floor with Sodium lauryl sulphate solution.


SRB  Slip-resistance on steel floor with glycerol.


SRC  SRA + SRB.


FO Oil-resistant outsole.


A  Electrical resistance (between 0.1-1000 MegaOhms).


E  Energy absorption in the heel area (tested at 20 Joules).

Shoes marked with an O are not equipped with a protective steel toecap but meet the basic requirements for work shoes.
